  • Long description Influenza virus is a single-stranded RNA virus, segmented, 70nm in diameter and enveloped. Strains are described by geographic origin, strain number, year of isolation and hemagglutination (H) and neuraminidase (N) antigens. Influenza A and B are the two types of influenza viruses that cause epidemic human disease. Influenza type C infections cause a mild respiratory illness and are not thought to cause epidemics._x000B__x000B_This protein forms a continuous shell on the inner side of the lipid bilayer. Maintains the structural integrity of the virus particle through hydrophobic interactions. Also mediates the encapsidation of RNA nucleoprotein cores into the membrane envelope.
